Virginia surfers have long dreamed of surfing the deserted break at Fisherman’s Island. Located at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay and clearly visible by car from the Bay Bridge, this hidden in plain view surf break is tantalizingly inaccessible. Very few people have surfed the break at Fisherman’s Island because there is no public road access - the island and its beaches are protected as a National Wildlife Refuge.
But in the words of Doc Brown, “Where we’re going, we don’t need roads.” And that’s where Sail & Surf Adventures, Captain Clay and our 36’ sailboat Galene have you covered.
This trip is for the true adventure seekers ready for a one-of-a-kind experience. We depart homeport in Weems, VA and embark on a 40 mile sail down the Chesapeake Bay, arriving to Cape Charles for the evening and enjoy a dinner in the quaint waterfront town, and an overnight stay at the marina. In the morning we head to Fisherman’s Island for exploration of the surf breaks and hopefully a surf session. We tuck back into Cape Charles for the night and return to Weems on the final day.
Some prior surf experience is required. The surf at Fisherman’s Island is not conducive to providing lessons for complete beginners and we want our guests to have the best experience possible. SUP surfers are welcome! If you prefer just to watch from the anchored boat while your friends or family surf, that is fine too.
You will be responsible for food/drink while the boat is in port. Food while aboard will be provided. If you would like to bring any specialty beverages or snacks for yourself (we provide water only, please do- you are welcome to add them to the fridge onboard). If you have dietary preferences there is an opportunity at checkout for you to let us know. We are happy to accommodate vegetarian, GF and vegan options.
Each guest will have a private berth (not necessarily a private cabin).
We plan our around tides and currents in hopes of providing the best possible surf experience; however, Virginia surf can be fickle- surfable conditions are not guaranteed. We encourage you to embrace an attitude of adventure and invite you to enjoy the journey. There is lots to enjoy about this trip- sailing down the Bay, losing sight of land, arriving at Cape Charles by sea and enjoying the charm of the town, spending the night aboard a sailboat and enjoying coffee on deck, the anticipation and sense of adventure that comes with seeking untapped surf breaks…the list goes on.
If conditions are unsafe (severe thunderstorms, hurricanes, other severe weather) and a trip needs to be cancelled due to weather; you will be contacted at least 24 hours before the scheduled trip. Cancelled trips due to unsafe weather forecasts are entitled to a full refund.
